MamaNee Thai Restaurant

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I’m always on the lookout for good, cheap Thai that’s closer to home than Thaila Thai, so the arrival of Mamanee (324 Smith St, Collingwood) definitely peaked my interest. It’s got a fresh-looking shopfront, and the food is prepared up the front, which is generally a good sign.

A quick glance at the menu, and I could see it ticked another box on price, with most curries and stir fries at $13.50. This is a little pricier than Thaila Thai, but rice comes free with these dishes at Mamanee. Vegetarian dishes are

With the food prepared up the front, I could see the raw ingredients were on display, which gave me further confidence. Everything looked good quality, including the meat. Tick.

I ordered a green chicken curry and a chili basil beef stir fry, and I’m pleased to say that both were great. The curry had a bit of filler vegetable in the form of large chunks of carrot and potato, but was well cooked and there was a bit of fire to the rich green sauce. Likewise, the stir fry was equally good, with the vegetables quite crisp, not having been overcooked or fished out of a freezer as is the case at some Thai restaurants. Tick.

Servings are generous, both the main dishes and the ‘complimentary’ rice. Tick.

San Marzano Tomatoes in Melbourne

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Although I wasn’t specifically looking for them at the time, I stumbled across a Melbourne supplier of canned San Marzano tomatoes, and at a very reasonable price. I’d seen them for sale at Giant Steps, makers of the best pizzas in Melbourne, but they were fairly expensive.

I found them at a deli/cafe called Gibney’s Fine Foods (136-138 Martin St, Gardenvale), priced at less than $2 a can.

While you’re there, try the delicious goats cheese and semi-dried tomato omelette.

Wayan Balinese Restaurant

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Geelong seems to shut down after about 8pm in the middle of week, so it was a pleasant to surprise to discover Wayan Balinese Restaurant (82A Lt Malop St, Geelong) open at 8.30pm on a Tuesday night.

Given the day of the week, the time of the evening, and the slightly obscure Little Malop Street location is a bit out of the way, it was doing well to have four tables taken at this time. Based on the quality of the food though, it deserves to do well. We ordered two different chicken ‘curries’, which actually ended up being the same dish, except one had broccoli and carrot rather than potato. The coconut-based sauce was very tasty (apart from the hair), and the thigh meat was reasonably free of fat.

Prices are reasonable, for both food and drinks. There’s a small selection of local wines, and even a very good local beer (Lonsdale Lager).

Despite only two staff handling both cooking and waiting, service was relatively fast, if a little (okay, a lot) awkward.
